Horry County Moves to OPCON 4

Conway, South Carolina –Horry County has moved to Operating Condition Level 4 (OPCON 4) in preparation of wintry weather over the next couple of days. OPCON 4 puts Horry County on “Alert” status, which means county officials have begun discussions with South Carolina Emergency Management, the National Weather Service, local municipalities, and will continue to monitor the storm closely. Horry County is reviewing all operational plans and will keep everyone aware of any changes in the forecast and will take appropriate action when necessary.

Horry County Emergency Management Division urges everyone to continue proper precautions such as:

·         Citizens unaccustomed to dealing with life-threatening aspects of severe cold should remember to keep exposure to cold weather to a minimum. Frostbite is harmful and painful. Hypothermia, or low body temperature, can be lethal, and it is particularly hard on infants and the elderly. When the weather turns cold, don't go outdoors unless you have to. If you must go out, dress in layers and cover your ears, head and hands. Remember, high wind speeds dramatically increase the effects of cold temperatures by increasing the "wind chill factor."
·         Stock up on heating fuel and prepare emergency heating sources, such as fireplaces, wood stoves and space heaters. (WARNING: Never burn charcoal briquettes indoors.)
·         Remember the usual emergency supplies: a flashlight and batteries, a battery-powered radio, extra non-perishable food and water, extra medicines and baby items, and first-aid supplies.
·         Freezing temperatures can burst water pipes in homes that lack heat or proper insulation. Wrap exposed pipes or take other measure to insulate them from the cold.
·         Prepare a place indoors for pets. Move farm animals to shelters and have extra feed and water available.
·         Be aware of possible carbon monoxide poisoning, electric shock and fire if using alternative sources for electricity, heating or cooking.
·         Residents are encouraged to check on elderly and at-risk neighbors and relatives due to the increased potential for power outages and cold temperatures.
·         Use caution when traveling on roads.

Councilman Schwartzkopf Announces His Intention Not to Seek Re-election

Several decades ago an esteemed member of the House of Representatives stated that elected officials and public servants have a shelf life. After a period of time the effectiveness of the elected official and the benefits and services the constituents receive are gradually reduced and somewhat diminished. I feel that I have reached that time and point in my life. Therefore, in an attempt to insure that the vitality of Horry County Council and District 8 remain at a high level of effectiveness, I am taking this opportunity to announce that I am not going to file for re-election. Any resident of District 8 is welcome and encouraged to file and run for the seat I have held for the last 11 years.

I am grateful and appreciative of the citizens of District 8 and throughout the county for electing me three times. Furthermore, I am thankful for their willingness to share their thoughts, ideas, and concerns with me the last 11 years. I will remain in office until December 31, 2014, and look forward to continuing to serve the citizens until that time. Additional information is available by contact Carl Schwartzkopf at (843) 347-9591.

How is Hotel Impossible transforming a Myrtle Beach hotel? Watch the show

By Steve Jones

January 22, 2014

Hotel Impossible in MB"Hotel Impossible" is filming at the former Carnival Motor Inn at 2502 North Ocean Boulevard. The Travel Channel show is the latest in a number of national shows shot on the Grand Strand including two episodes of "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition," "Trailer Park: Welcome to Myrtle Manor," Party Down South," "Restaurant Impossible," "House Hunters," "Holy Smokers," and "Passport." The producers will not say when the Myrtle Beach show will air, but the show is on Travel Channel every Monday at 10 p.m. View Full Gallery JANET BLACKMON MORGAN — jblackmon@thesunnews.com |Buy Photo

If you ask the cast and crew of Hotel Impossible the details of what the people have been doing at Myrtle Beach’s Carnival Motor Inn the past few days, the reply will be: “Watch the show.”

Host Anthony Melchiorri, who is the epicenter of the show that gives owners of failing hotels a plan to success, routinely clashes on each episode with owners of failing hotels over what needs to be done. But he suggested that the Myrtle Beach episode might be the first where that doesn’t happen.

Really?

Watch the show.

The show, which finished filming its seventh episode Wednesday, also insists that media who interview them on their projects not reveal the name the reborn hotel will take as a condition of the interview, Melchiorri said.

The Patient Will See You Now

The Future of Technology in Healthcare

    By Dr. Nic Gay, SimpleTherapy
January 15, 2014

The world of Health IT is evolving — fast — and the prospect of a virtual doctor visit becoming as well accepted as a traditional office appointment. It is not far-fetched, but in fact is the most appropriate care for many patients.

Imagine a face-to-face interaction with your doctor without haggling over the time of your appointment, avoiding the waiting room and avoiding exposure to other patients. Although this is not sufficient for acutely ill patients, many patients do not require an in-person evaluation by their physician.

As the notion of the healthcare consumer evolves, the long-delayed application of modern technology that allows a doctor-to-video conference with patients is finally being applied, and even accepted as a proper form of care. In parallel, smartphone attachments are turning cell phones and “wearables” into traditional doctors’ tools that allow vital-sign recording, activity logging, heart-rhythm tracing and many other forms of in-depth physical examination.

This tech trend is building as our overall healthcare landscape changes with the Affordable Care Act. Despite its setback at the outset, 10 percent of Americans may eventually obtain some form of “health insurance” under the new plan. This influx of patients may increase already overburdened doctors’ offices. and subsequently push more individuals into taking their sore throat to the hospital because they can’t get an appointment with their physician. To this aim, the truest application of the virtual visit is for the patient  to be reassured that nothing ominous or malignant is going on. Reassurance drives a significant portion of doctor visits.

Something for everyone at AgriBiz and Farm Expo in Florence

Two-day event to highlight the latest in agriculture

FLORENCE, S.C. — If it’s new and innovating in the world of agriculture, it likely can be found at the Florence Civic Center as the second annual S.C. AgriBiz and Farm Expo gets underway Thursday.

The theme, “Rooted in Tradition, Thriving Through Innovation,” sets the tone that it won’t be your average tractor show. More than 100 agricultural vendors are scheduled to participate.

Over the two-day event, there are a multitude of educational opportunities to take in for anyone and everyone having a vested or remote interest in agriculture. Chairman Jody Martin said agriculture involves so much and that he has heard interest from schools and Future Farmers of America organizations expecting to attend the event.

Kings Highway road improvements expected to cause lane closures in Myrtle Beach

By Maya T. Prabhu

January 13, 2014

Drivers on Kings Highway in Myrtle Beach soon could soon see lane closures while crews work on $1.76 million in improvements over the course of the next few months.

Myrtle Beach city staff members hope a contractor will be able to begin within the next few weeks on improvements that have been in the works for a few years.

Construction will begin on each side of the street in the 700 block of Kings Highway North , closing the lane closest to the curb in each direction, said city engineer Patrick Sadek. The work will move south block by block every 15 days until completed, with the project ending at Third Avenue South.
