Horry County Sheriff warns of Phone Scam

By Todd Garvin
August 29, 2013

The Horry County Sheriff’s Office is warning local residents about a scam in the area.

A caller or callers will call residents and identify themselves as a deputy with the sheriff’s office and that they have a summons that need to paid. The caller will then solicit credit card information over the phone.

What makes the scam effective is that the phone number on caller IDs is the actual number for the sheriff’s office, but software exists that can clone numbers, officials warn.

Sheriff’s office officials stress that no one in the office will ever ask for money over the telephone, and that all payments should be made at the local magistrate’s office.

States Resist Obamacare

By Sandhya Somashekhar
August 28, 2013

Several Republican-led states at the forefront of the campaign to undermine President Obama’s health-care law have come up with new ways to try to thwart it, refusing to enforce consumer protections, for example, and restricting federally funded workers hired to help people enroll in coverage.

And in at least one state, Missouri, local officials have been barred from doing anything to help put the law into place.

The actions have drawn less attention than congressional efforts to cut off funding for the law, or earlier state decisions to refuse to set up online insurance marketplaces or reject an expansion of Medicaid, which sharply limited the law’s reach.

Golf.com World Am attracts most participants in 5 years to Myrtle Beach

August 25, 2013

By Alan Blondin

MYRTLE BEACH — An 8 percent increase in participation for the 2013 Golf.com World Amateur Handicap Championship could be partially attributed to the event celebrating a round anniversary number, with this year’s event being the 30th.

But tournament operator Myrtle Beach Golf Holiday is hoping the anniversary is playing only a small part and it’s more of a sign of things to come and response to the tournament becoming a better value.

How A Black Hole Really Works

By GAUTAM NAIK
August 16, 2013

A cosmic monster in our own Milky Way is giving scientists a brilliant show

The black hole at the center of our galaxy has been on a near-starvation diet for almos a million years—but now it's time for a snack.

Scientists in Garching, Germany, are closely watching a rare event some 26,000 light years away: a supermassive black hole in the act of devouring a huge gas cloud. It's providing the first-ever glimpse of how a black hole uses its massive gravitational power to pull in and consume interstellar materials—a little understood phenomenon.

"The cloud is being torn apart," said Stefan Gillessen of the Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics in Garching, who first brought the event to the world's attention in 2011.

A black hole can form when a large star dies and its matter collapses into a much smaller volume. It's as if the mass of the Earth were squeezed into a ball the size of a marble. The resulting gravity is so intense that even light cannot escape.

Georgetown Museum gets huge propeller

By Rusty Ray

 Aug 15, 2013

GEORGETOWN (WBTW) - If you're in downtown Georgetown soon, you'll likely notice an outstanding addition to the streetscape: a large, rusted, barnacled, ship propeller.

The South Carolina Maritime Museum recently accepted a donation of the propeller, which came from the Norwegian steamship Leif Eriksson, which sank off the coast between Georgetown and Charleston in February, 1905.

According to the Georgetown Times, the Georgetown Propeller Club and Lowcountry Marine Salvage helped make the donation possible.  The Eriksson wreck was not positively identified until 2007, and since then the preservation groups have worked to keep the propeller from going for scrap metal.  (Read more from the Times here.)

According to excerpts from a New York Times article at the time, the Eriksson collided in poor weather conditions with a Standard Oil-owned steamship, City of Everett. Two men died, according to the paper, while 20 men were rescued.

For now, the propeller is propped up against the side of the museum's building on Front Street.

Educators, students dedicate new building for Early College High School

Published: August 13, 2013

CONWAY — “Wow” was the word being heard around the new HCS Early College High School building Tuesday evening, as students, staff and guests gathered to dedicate the Trailblazers’ new home.

The 38,500-square-foot facility is the culmination of hopes and dreams that started more than six years ago with Horry County Schools’ Early College program, which became a full-fledged high school in 2012. The new building keeps Early College on Horry-Georgetown Technical College’s Conway campus, where its classes always have been held, but gives the school its own space in which to start its sophomore year Aug. 21.

mixed feelings about reality show

by April Baker

Posted: 08.02.2013

On Friday, crews worked hard to prepare for the newest reality show to hit the Grand Strand, which for the time being, has been called "Party Down South."

Filming will start Monday for the new reality show that will air on CMT about a group of friends spending their summer at the beach.

As crews continue to prepare for the first day of filming, they've been working with the local business community.

Many Murrells Inlet businesses told WPDE NewsChannel15 they have been visited by show recruiters, who have come to them with contracts that would allow them into their businesses and film.
