“TOM”
is the real life story of Goffinet’s father’s successful evasion
from Nazi capture after bailing out of his Lancaster bomber over
Belgium in 1943. This is not a history of the war, but as we prepare
to celebrate the 70th
anniversary of the Normandy landings that preceded the end of WWII,
many of today`s generations are unaware of the horrors of that period
when Hitler had set out to dominate the World. To set the stage for
the reader, the author briefly recaps some of the events that led up
to the start of the war in 1939, beginning with the rise of Hitler`s
power in Germany in the early 1930s. Author McLaren then cleverly
weaves her father`s story around key events of WWII, and includes the
origin of her unusual name.
