FREEWOODS FARM EMANCIPATION DAY CELEBRATION 2013

A Run Away Farm Boy returns to the Farm! In 1944, Bertie Bowman, at the age of 13, ran away from his father’s farm in Summerton, SC. He went to Washington, DC and started as a Step Sweeper at the US Capitol.  For 68 years Bowman stood at the epicenter of government and developed friendships with Lyndon Johnson, Bill Clinton, William Fulbright, Strom Thurmond and other national leaders. He became the Hearing Coordinator for the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. In running away from Summerton this lad hid in his father’s cotton patch. Welcome back to the cotton patch!
            After the Tour, we will hold a Gathering in the Farm House (Freewoods Farm) at High Noon (12:00 Noon). Mr. Bowman will sell and sign copies of his book: Step By Step.

           3:30 PM Hear our Keynote Speaker Mr. James L Felder. For four days in November 1963, Felder guarded the body of President John F. Kennedy as Team Leader of his Casket Team (Pallbearers). From Air Force One to the White House, to the Capitol and Arlington National Cemetery, they carried the President for a grieving nation. Then Felder became a moving force in the Civil Right Movement in South Carolina which changed our way of life.
